Best Software For Blocking Websites And Social Media

Matthew Averkamp

These tools can help you...

  • Be more productive online by using social media blockers to block any website such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, etc.
  • Block ALL browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) or specific applications from accessing the Internet. This is better than using browser extensions such as Leechblock, StayFocused, Nanny, BlockSite, etc.
  • Block websites and applications during certain hours of the day or days of the week (ex. 9am – 5pm, weekdays).
  • Set a timer to block distractions for a set period of time.

Focus costs $20 (one-time fee).

Focus software is only available for Mac.

With Focus, you’ll have the option to block both websites and applications.

You can choose which days and times websites and applications should be blocked or you can set a timer.

Settings can be locked (optional).

Freedom pricing starts at $7/month (or $2.40/month when paid annually). A lifetime plan is also available for $129 (one-time fee).

Freedom software is available for both Windows and Mac. Mobile apps are also available for iOS and Android.

With Freedom, you’ll have the option to block websites and some mobile applications.

You can choose which days and times websites and applications should be blocked or you can set a timer.

Settings can be locked (optional).

SelfControl is completely free to use.

SelfControl software is only available for Mac.

With SelfControl, you’ll have the option to blacklist (or whitelist) a list of websites. Whitelisting blocks everything except for the sites you choose.

Websites will start to be blocked once you start the timer. Settings are locked until the timer expires.
